What is printable wall art?

Printable wall art is artwork sold as a digital file. After you buy it, you download the file and print it yourself, or take it to a print shop, instead of waiting for a framed or posted print to arrive.

The main advantages are flexibility and speed. You choose the size, the paper and the frame, and you can print again later if you move house, redecorate or want a copy for a gift. The trade-off is that the finished quality depends on your printer, your paper and your settings, which is why we have written a step-by-step printing guide.

Choosing the right print size

Print size is mostly about where the art will hang and which frame you already own. Most UK frames are sold in ISO “A” sizes or in standard metric sizes such as 30 × 40 cm and 50 × 70 cm.

SizeMillimetresInchesWorks well for
A5148 × 2105.8 × 8.3Shelves, desks and small gallery-wall pieces
A4210 × 2978.3 × 11.7Desks, hallways, bedrooms and ready-made frames
A3297 × 42011.7 × 16.5Above a desk, sideboard or bed
A2420 × 59416.5 × 23.4A single statement piece on a larger wall
A1594 × 84123.4 × 33.1Large feature walls, usually printed at a print shop

As a rule of thumb, art hung above a sofa or bed looks balanced when it is about two thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. The centre of a picture usually sits at around eye level, roughly 145 cm from the floor.

Other common frame sizes

Frame sizeShapeCompared with A sizes
20 × 25 cm (8 × 10 in)4:5Shorter and wider than A4
30 × 40 cm3:4Shorter and wider than A4
40 × 50 cm4:5Shorter and wider than A3
50 × 70 cm5:7Very close to A-size proportions

If a file’s shape does not match your frame, you will see white borders or need to crop the image. A frame mount (also called a mat) is the easiest fix. Check each product page for the sizes and shapes included, and see our printing guide for resolution details.

Styling tips for watercolour and botanical prints

  • Keep the frame simple. Soft watercolour pieces suit plain frames in natural wood, white or black, often with a mount that gives the artwork room to breathe.
  • Echo one colour from the room. Blues and greens in a botanical print can pick up cushions, curtains or a painted wall. Blue watercolour pieces such as the Blue Watercolour Wildflower Bouquet sit comfortably with white, cream, grey and natural wood.
  • Space groups evenly. For a gallery wall, leave a consistent gap of about 5 to 8 cm between frames and lay everything out on the floor first.
  • Choose the room with care. Living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and home offices are all good homes for prints. Keep paper prints away from steamy bathrooms and busy cooker areas.
  • Protect the colours. Direct sunlight fades most inks over time, so hang prints away from bright, sunny windows.

Printing tips at a glance

  • Check the pixel dimensions of your file before choosing a size.
  • Use photo paper rather than plain office paper for the best colour.
  • Print at 100% or “actual size”, not “fit to page”.
  • Do a small test print first to check the layout.
  • Let the ink dry fully before handling or framing.

Frequently asked questions

What do I receive when I buy a digital print?

You receive one or more digital files to download. Nothing is posted. The product page lists what is included, so check it before you buy.

Can I print at any size?

Within limits. A file prepared for A4 can be printed smaller without a problem, but stretching it much larger can make it look soft or pixelated. Choose a size that matches the file’s shape and resolution, and ask us if you are not sure.

What paper should I use?

For home printing, matte or satin inkjet photo paper gives good results for most artwork. Our printing guide compares paper types.

Can a print shop print my file?

Yes. Most print shops can print a file you bring on a USB stick or send by email. Tell them the exact size you want and ask to see paper samples. Some services ask you to confirm that you have the right to print the image. If you bought the file from us you can say so, and you are welcome to contact us if they need more.

Why does my print look different from my screen?

Screens give off light and paper reflects it, so colours can shift. Choosing the right paper setting, printing on photo paper and judging the result in normal room light usually brings the print much closer to the screen.

I cannot find my download. What should I do?

Check your order confirmation email and your spam folder, and look under Downloads in My Account if you have an account. If it is still missing, email us with your order number.

Can I print more than one copy?

If you have a particular use in mind, such as printing copies for other people, please ask us before you buy.

Do you sell printed art too?

Yes. The Little Moments Art Print is printed to order and delivered to you. Visit the shop to see the current range.
